Job DescriptionThe New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.The Labor Relations Unit advises senior leadership on labor relations matters and policies and handles disciplinary matters for non-uniformed employees and grievances for all employees, including health and safety matters. The unit’s attorneys conduct hearings and represent the Department in administrative hearings/trials and pre-trial conferences. The Summer Graduate Intern who is enrolled in a law school will work under the supervision of an attorney to assist with review of discovery and other documentation requested, perform legal research and writing and provide legal analysis of various issues related to labor and employment law. The intern’s assignments will also include preparation for and participation in administrative hearings and pre-trial conferences, under the supervision of an attorney. The intern’s assignments may also include attendances at various meetings and collective bargaining sessions, and an opportunity to participate in site visits in jail facilities with the unions. The intern will shadow an attorney to see the progression of cases as well as other projects.- Assist attorneys in reviewing discovery documents and other relevant materials as requested.- Conduct legal research and write memos analyzing various issues related to labor and employment law.- Prepare for and participate in administrative hearings and pre-trial conferences under the supervision of an attorney.- Attend various meetings and collective bargaining sessions to gain insight into labor relations processes.- Participate in site visits to jail facilities alongside labor unions.- Shadow attorneys observe the progression of cases and involvement in other projects.SUMMER COLLEGE INTERN - 10234
