Job DescriptionUnder the direction of a plumber, a plumber's helper will assist with emergency & scheduled plumbing repairs of standpipe and sprinkler systems. The duties will include but not limited to the following:1. Assist Plumber with the following related tasks: perform work relating to the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair & testing of standpipes and sprinklers. Set, maintain and repair plumbing equipment and accessories.2. Carry tools, working material and equipment and prepare the work location. Move heavy valves, piping fixtures. Cut, drill or prepare openings as may be necessary for the installation, maintenance or repair of fire safety, asset clean work area.3. Any additional work related to fire safety and the good of the Authority.Additional Information1. For NYCHA employees: This position is open as a promotional opportunity only. It is not open on a direct transfer (lateral) basis. 2. NYCHA employees applying for promotional, title or level change opportunities must have served a period of one year at current location and in current title and level (if applicable). 3. Candidates will be required to take and pass a practical exam. During the practical exam candidates will be required to apply a hard trowelled plaster finish on two walls and ceiling of a plastering booth. Booth must be finished to the designated size void of any imperfections. Candidates will also be required to make the walls and ceiling straight and true with three finished corners. Candidates are to wear a full Plasterer’s uniform; and have a full set of plaster tools. Duration of the Practical Exam will be 2 hours and 30 minutes. Note: Failure to wear appropriate uniform, bring tool bag, finish exam and/or complete assigned booth as specified may impact your exam score. 4. NYCHA residents are encouraged to apply. NYCHA provides benefits that include a choice of medical coverage plans, deferred compensation plans and a defined pension benefit plan as a member of the New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS).Note: Travel to developments citywide is a requirement, with the frequency determined by the Supervisor of Plumbers.Note: Certificates of Fitness for Citywide Sprinkler Systems (S-12) and Standpipe Systems (S-13) are required for this position.NOTE: IF THIS APPOINTMENT IS MADE ON A PROVISIONAL BASIS PURSUANT TO 65 OF THE NYS CIVIL SERVICE LAW, NO TENURE OR PERMANENCE ACCRUES TO AN INCUMBENT IN THIS POSITION BY VIRTUE OF SUCH APPOINTMENT.
