The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure and anticipates the need of the surgeon. He/she is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. The surgical technologist is able to function independently in the scrub and as a circulator under the supervision of the RN.
